Information for Trampers
If you're a tramper, our club offers a wide range of activities:
- Day and weekend tramps
- Instruction
- General outdoor interest trips
- Opportunities to assist in track work and clean up programmes
Day trips are generally held in nearby areas, although some further away day trips are included. Weekend trips mainly occur in surrounding national and forest parks (i.e. Tongariro, Urewera, Whirinaki, Pureora and Kaimanawa) and include trips camping under flies or tents, or trips utilising DOC huts.
There is a day walk or overnight trip planned for most weekends during the year. Every quarter, a three-month advance tramping schedule is prepared. Trips are graded to indicate the difficulty of the trip as follows:
Easy (suitable for beginners)
Medium (some experience necessary)
Hard (good fitness and experience required)
Booking Information
Prospective tramping members are more than welcome to come on a couple of tramps before joining the club. You need to book for all trips directly with the trip leader (as indicated on the tramping schedule) who will be able to discuss the route, its difficulty and any necessary equipment with you. It is important to book in a timely manner so the trip leader can plan accordingly.
- Weekend trips book by the closing date advertised in the programme or the Monday before
- Day trips book by 9 pm on the previous Friday
Generally, we car pool using members' own cars to travel to the tracks and the cost of this and any other expenses are shown on the schedule. Please bring a change of shoes for the return trip in case your boots get muddy or wet.
Day Trips
These normally depart from outside Tui House (just opposite Countdown Supermarket) on Te Ngae Road at the time indicated in the programme (e.g. a departure time of 9 am means leaving at 9 am). Each person must carry a day pack with their own food, drink, wet weather gear, etc. as indicated by the trip leader.
Weekend Trips
These are normally self-catering, so bring your own food and cooking gear. Trips depart either Friday night or Saturday morning, and meeting times and places will be organised by the trip leader. If you need advice on what to bring, ask the trip leader.
Club Meetings
The tramping section of the club meets at 7:30 pm on the 2nd Monday of the month February - November inclusive upstairs in the Rotorua Lakes Watersports Trust building on the lake front (Ohinemutu). At these meetings, we discuss recent trips and upcoming adventures and we usually have a guest speaker. New members, whether trampers or skiers, are especially welcome.
Club Equipment
The club owns some tents, packs and other equipment that can be used on both club and private trips for a modest cost. The trip leader can advise you on how to arrange to rent club equipment if necessary.
Important Note
Always carry a first aid pack and obey your trip leader. You should advise the trip leader of any medical conditions you have (e.g. asthma).
